Als junges Mädchen erlebt Darby Harper (Riele Downs) eine Nahtoderfahrung, die es ihr fortan ermöglicht, Kontakt zu bereits verstorbenen Menschen aufzunehmen. Eine Gabe und eine Bürde zugleich, denn nun wollen Geister Hilfe von ihr, die noch etwas auf der Erde zu erledigen haben. Darby ist so damit beschäftigt, Menschen aus dem Totenreich zu helfen, dass sie sich als Teenagerin immer mehr zurückzieht. Zeit für Freunde hat sie nicht, daher bleibt sie meist für sich allein. Doch durch einen schweren Schicksalsschlag an ihrer Highschool soll sich das ändern. Denn Capri (Auli'i Cravalho), das beliebteste Mädchen der Schule, stirbt plötzlich bei dem Versuch sich die Haare zu glätten. In ein paar Tagen wäre ihre große „Sweet 17“ – Geburtstagsparty gewesen und Capri wendet sich an Darby, die dafür sorgen soll, dass die Party trotzdem stattfindet. Doch um das zu schaffen, muss sie beliebt werden. Ist das vielleicht Darbys Chance auf ein Leben unter Lebenden?
